Water Quality

  • Compare how different commercial water filters purify and filter water.
  • Design and build your own filtration system. How does it perform compared to commercial standards.
  • How do different filter media perform - sand, grit, soil.
  • Investigate the effect of water impurities on plant growth. Try different washing up liquids or detergents.
  • Investigate the effect of water impurities on algal growth. Try different washing up liquids or detergents.
  • Compare biodegradability of different packing materials.
  • Design and build a water filtration system.
  • Investigate a system for sorting garbage before it goes to the landfill.
  • Can magnets be used to remove metal?

Geology: Soils & Rocks.

  • Compare erosion of different soils due to wind and rain.
  • Compare the physical characteristics of different rocks. How well do they support different loads (weight) or resist impact damage?
  • Does acid rain influence soil structure?

Weather.

  • Compare the weather experienced in your local area. Is it influenced by hills, lakes or buildings?
  • Compare the weather with factors such as temperature or air pressure.
  • Does the weather affect animal or human behavior?
  • Measure annual weather patterns over many years using tree ring data (dendochronology).
